What is a hash and what is it used for?

A hash is a cryptographic “digital fingerprint” of a file or text. It’s a fixed-length string of characters (e.g., 64 characters for SHA-256) generated by a mathematical algorithm. Even a minimal change to the original content (a single character) produces a completely different hash. This allows you to verify with absolute certainty whether a file has been altered, damaged, or tampered with.

Which hash algorithm should I use?

SHA-256 is the recommended modern standard for most uses: it offers an excellent balance between security and performance. SHA-512 is more secure but generates longer hashes. SHA-1 is considered obsolete and insecure for critical applications, but may still be useful for compatibility with legacy systems. For verifying digital signatures, always use SHA-256 with RSA-PSS.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No, absolutely not. When you upload a file or enter text, everything happens in your browser via JavaScript. RSA-PSS is a digital signature scheme that combines the RSA algorithm with PSS (Probabilistic Signature Scheme) padding. It allows you to mathematically verify that a message or document was signed by whoever possesses the private key corresponding to the provided public key, and that the content hasn’t been modified after signing. Can I use IntegrityScan to detect hacking on my site?

IntegrityScan can be part of a monitoring strategy, but it’s not an automatic detection system. The recommended workflow is: (1) calculate the hash of your critical pages when you know they’re clean, (2) save these hashes in a secure file, (3) periodically verify that current hashes match the saved ones. If you find differences, investigate immediately. For continuous automatic monitoring, consider dedicated tools like Tripwire or file integrity monitoring solutions.

Why does URL verification require an intermediary?

Browsers implement a security restriction called CORS (Cross-Origin Resource Sharing) that prevents JavaScript on one page from directly accessing content from different domains. Without a server-side intermediary, we couldn’t retrieve content from external pages to calculate their hash. Seoproof.org acts as a secure proxy: it retrieves the content, passes it to your browser for hash calculation, and doesn’t retain anything. It’s the only technically possible way to offer this functionality while maintaining privacy.

Does the exported JSON report contain sensitive data?

The JSON report contains only verification results: calculated hashes, comparison outcomes, timestamps, and technical metadata. It doesn’t include the original content of analyzed files or texts. It’s safe to share with colleagues or clients for documentation and audits. However, if you’re verifying sensitive content, consider that the report itself reveals which files/pages you analyzed and when.
